Solar pump sets usage on the rise in farm sector

(01 Aug 2016)

Use of solar pump sets is on the rise in the agriculture sector as the government is providing 85 per cent subsidy to farmers on  actual cost. With an aim to promote solar power usage in cultivation, the State government is implementing subsidy scheme for solar power motors.

Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) and National Renewable Energy Resources Development Corporation (NREDC), revenue and ground water department are jointly implementing the scheme for farmers.

According to guidelines, farmers should have one acre of farm land and they have to register their names at Mee Seva centre by paying Rs 25 as registration fee. At the time of registration, farmer needs to submit Xerox copies of Pattadar Passbook, Aadhaar card. After registration, APEPDCL and NREDC have to conduct joint field verification to study feasibility. The revenue and ground water departments’ officials have to verify the farm land and issue No Objection Certificate (NOC) if trees do not exist within 30 feet distance from the proposed borewell spot.

Actual price of 5 HP solar power motor is Rs 4.29 lakh, but farmers have to pay only Rs 55,000. Price for 3 HP motor is Rs 3.36 lakh, but farmers can purchase it by paying Rs 40,000. Farmers in Srikakulam rural, Gara, Laveru, Ponduru, Etcherla, Narasannapeta and Palakonda mandals were showing interest in using solar power motors to cultivate crops in the upland areas.

Till the end of June this year, 890 farmers registered their names with APEPDCL and NREDC for solar power motors and after joint field inspection, the  officials granted permission for 704 solar power motors out of 864 applications.

“Solar power motors with five years warranty were functioning effectively”, said APEPDCL superintendent engineer D Satyannarayana and NREDC district manager MVK Raju. All farmers are eligible for sanctioning the solar power motors,” they explained.
