The rooftop of the mechanical engineering department of NIT-K, Surathkal, which got a vertical extension on Friday, will be dedicated for solar research. The power generated here will be utilized for running few electronic gadgets in the building.
The new building was inaugurated by Karanam Uma Maheshwar Rao, director, National Institute of Technology- Karnataka, Surathkal.
Ajay Kumar Yadav from mechanical department said that rooftop of the newly constructed building will be turned into a research lab on solar energy. The equipment which is currently housed in other buildings will be re-commissioned in the vast rooftop. The research will be on improving solar power efficiency with an aim to exploit it commercially in later stages," he explained.
Narendranath S, professor and head department of mechanical engineering, said that currently there are about 500 UG students, 140 PG students and around 100 research scholars. The new infrastructure would facilitate faculty and students in their academic and research work.
"With modern facilities and state-of-the-art labs, our aim is to reach to the levels IITs," remarked Uma Maheshwar Rao.
